Italia 2006 campione del mondo

During our recent holiday to Italy it gradually dawned that must have some unknown Italian ancestry as appear to have many traits despite not looking at all Roman:

Love of fantastic food. One evening we eat at a restaurant in Como at the lakeside - <http://www.hotelmetropolesuisse.com/frame_ing.html>. The food was superb – Gamberoni and Java Bean Soup (with fried spring onions). Our favourite white wine was Cortese Dell'Alto Monferrato;

Passion for driving but with the patience of a 5 year old in a sweet shop. The roads around Menaggio are steep and wind up into the Alpine mountains. The local drivers give no hesitation before sounding their horn to let you know that they are being held up;

Romantic at heart. We went up the Brunate funicular to see spectacular views over the whole of Como town and the lake. At the top a couple were intent on exploring each others tonsils – we just played gooseberry. The beauty of the Italian lakes are that they have been kept unspoilt without large commercial exploitation. On other days we went on boat trips to Varenna and Bellagio – both picture postcard villages squashed for space between the lake and mountains;

We visited Lugano in Switzerland on one day which is under 1hrs drive from Menaggio. They are obviously clever in Lugano as they encourage visitors to take on their grand masters in the town centre on a large public chess set.

Perhaps the most embarrassing part of the vacation was that to use the pool you had to wear swim hats. Thank goodness no photographs were taken.

The most stressful part of the holiday came at the very end. The gates of the villa that we stayed at, Le Terrazze, were operated using a security code and after a particularly severe thunderstorm the control box was frazzled. We needed to get to the airport for our flights but were stuck behind the the frustratingly stubborn green gates. I won't tell you how we got out – someone might sue us.
